why a letter, why now

So many takes. So much content. So much AI. So much division.

We consume sports through screens, stats, and infinite scrolling. We watch the historic penalty kick, we cheer, and then the timeline refreshes. The moment passes into the archive.

These letters exist to pause the feed. Dear Sport is for the mega-fan who remembers exactly where they were during THAT big moment. It’s also for the curious newcomer who wants to understand why we care so much.

It’s an invitation to hold a moment in your hands, read it slowly, and connect with a community that feels it just as deeply as you do.

a word from the founder

Sports have always been a huge part of my life. I played all different ones growing up. I played lacrosse in college. I watched them with my dad.

But the 1996 Olympics was my gateway.

I taped every second of the gymnastics. I wrote a book report on Dominique Moceanu. I even took up gymnastics for a while, because 9-year-old Natalie was going to be the next Shannon Miller (spoiler alert: no she was not).

That’s the feeling Dear Sport seeks to capture and pass along. If you’ve felt the weight of a moment like Kerri Strug’s vault, Brandi Chastain’s penalty kick, or Lisa Leslie’s first dunk in the WNBA, you already know exactly what I mean. This is for you.

I hope you feel something each time you read a Dear Sport letter. I hope you learn something. And mostly, I hope you feel a sense of community knowing there are other fans out there who care as deeply as you do.

— Natalie
